Book Review: Glass and Feathers By Lissa Sloan
The story of Cinderella is one with which we are all familiar. It’s one of those stories that we’ve heard so often that it would be natural to assume that there’s nothing new to add. However, in the case of Lissa Sloan’s Glass and Feathers that would be a very wrong assumption to make. The novel pulls the reader into a dark, enchanting world that is compelling from start to finish. It contains surprising twists, is realistically told, and introduces new characters to the story while remaining true to the fairy tale genre.
Glass and Feathers starts after the girl in the glass slippers marries the prince. She remains nameless throughout the book, which, along with the choice of a first-person narrative, works very well because it brings the reader closer to this girl, so much so that it often feels as if you are her, struggling to survive in a world where you don’t belong. I think that few of us have ever considered what it must be like for this fairy tale character to exchange her wretched life with her stepmother and sisters for one in which everything seems perfect on the surface—married to the most eligible man in the kingdom and living in splendour. Still, it’s also a world where gardening or slicing an apple yourself is frowned upon. The novel skilfully touches on this, making the main character very relatable.
Another thing I really liked about Glass and Feathers is how magic is represented. It plays a major role in the story, but it’s subtle, dark, and yet so enchanting that it is bound to entrance the reader.
Overall, this is a very well-written, darkly enchanting, and moving story. While I by no means possess any true witchy powers yet, I can guarantee that anyone who picks up this novel will fall in love with not just the girl in the glass slippers, but also with two characters known as Mother and Jack. To avoid giving away too much of the plot, I won’t say more about them, except that I strongly recommend getting to know them.
